What medicine is covered by Medical Insurance?

Our Medical Insurance plans give you cover for various types of medicines. This ensures you get access to the medicine you need, when you need it.

We know that medicine and medical care in South Africa is expensive. Get Medical Insurance provides affordable Medical Insurance for all. Depending on your Medical Insurance plan, your medicine benefits will vary.

Medicine benefits with Get Medical Insurance.

Acute Medication (Short-term Medication).

This benefit provides access to Acute Medication covered at 100% of the agreed rate. This applies provided:

  • Your Contracted Service Provider (GP) must prescribe all Acute Medication. Your Acute Medication must appear on the Network Provider Acute Medication formulary list. You can get your Acute Medication without a co-payment.
  • Your Contracted Service Provider (GP) or a contracted pharmacy dispenses your Acute Medication.
  • If your GP or pharmacy is not contracted to a Network provider, your Acute Medication is not covered. 

Over the Counter (OTC) Medication.

You can get your Over the Counter (OTC) Medication from a contracted pharmacy. Ask your pharmacist for advice on Over The Counter (OTC) Medication. 

You get up to R105 cover per quarter for your OTC Medication on our standard plan. There is an annual limit of R420 per insured party. 

You get up to R110 cover per quarter for your OTC Medication on our premium plan. There is an annual limit of R440 per insured party.

Immunisation.

The following Insured Parties may get one flu vaccination per year:

  • Children between six months and six years of age.
  • Pregnant women.
  • Insured Party 65 years of age and older.
  • Adults and children who register for Chronic Medication to treat these conditions: Chronic pulmonary disorders (including Asthma), Cardiovascular disorders (except isolated hypertension), Renal or Metabolic disorders (including diabetes mellitus), Patients with immunosuppression.

Chronic Medication (Long-term Medication).

Chronic Medication will be covered in full (100% of agreed rate) if: Prescribed Medication forms part of the Chronic Medication formulary. You have registered for the Chronic Medication with the Contracted Services Provider. After approval of the Chronic Medication, you can obtain your Chronic Medication at a Network Provider, contracted pharmacy or contracted courier pharmacy who will deliver your Chronic Medication to the address you selected at no additional cost.

With our standard Medical Insurance plan Chronic Medication is only available for 7 types of Chronic Conditions. Our Premium Medical Insurance plan provides Chronic Medication for 27 types of Chronic Conditions.
