What does a Hospital Plan include?

Get Medical Insurance outlines what benefits are included in a Hospital Plan.

Having medical cover is important, you never know when you may need to be hospitalised. State healthcare facilities in South Africa are not up to the standard you may want for your family. To give your family access to private healthcare facilities, you need medical cover.

A Hospital Plan can give your family access to private healthcare in the case of a medical emergency. You’re covered for in-hospital treatment for injuries from accidents or medical emergencies.

Who should get a Hospital Plan?

Anyone wanting cover for accidents or medical emergencies should get a Hospital Plan.

A Hospital Plan is ideal if you are:

  • Young and have good general health.
  • Only looking for cover in the event of an accident or a medical emergency.
  • Looking for affordable medical cover.

Comprehensive medical cover is expensive, and most young people cannot afford high premiums. Many young people start off on a Hospital Plan, as this is one of the most affordable cover for emergencies.

What does a Hospital Plan cover?

A Hospital Plan does not give you cover for day-to-day medical expenses. A Hospital Plan only provides cover for in-hospital medical expenses. A Hospital Plan usually covers some of the following medical expenses:

In-hospital stays: The cost of your hospital bed. This includes nursing and hospital staff fees.

In-hospital Doctor fees: The cost of your doctor or surgeon who treats you in hospital.

Prescribed medicine: The cost of medicine that is prescribed to you while you are in hospital.

Specified tests and procedures: The cost of specific tests and procedures. These are only procedures that are required for your treatment while in the hospital. Some of these include things like X-rays and blood tests.

Theatre fees: The cost of using the operating theatre for procedures or surgeries.

Intensive care unit (ICU) fees: The cost of using the ICU for critical care.

Hospital Plans do not cover out-of-hospital expenses. Additionally, certain procedures may not be covered under a Hospital Plan. You should always review the policy documents to understand the plan's benefits.

What are my other options?

Hospital Plans usually don’t have any day-to-day benefits. Even though you have a Hospital Plan, you will still have to pay out-of-pocket for GP or dentist visits. You may need a more comprehensive medical plan to cover all your needs at an affordable price.
